Russia Announces $1.77 Billion Federal Investment in New Nuclear Plant Construction in 2010
GALWAY, IRELAND--March 4, 2010--Researched by Industrial Info Resources (Sugar Land, Texas)--Russian Prime Minister Vladimir Putin has announced a federal investment of $1.77 billion (1.3 billion euros) to fund the building of new nuclear power plants in 2010. At the same time, Russia will embark on a development program for fast neutron reactors over the next decade. In April 2007, Russia approved a construction program designed to maximize the amount of electricity generated from nuclear, coal and hydro sources to reduce domestic consumption of gas, allowing more to be exported. This plan called for the construction of 26 new plants by 2020. However, in July last year, the Russian nuclear program was toned down to just one new unit per year as a result of the global financial crisis, although all 26 reactors will be constructed eventually, and the construction schedule will be resumed when circumstances allow.
